The Aftermath of Flooding—Airway Infections

The waters have receded, the clean-up is under way and our communities are toiling to return to “normal.” But amidst the mess that we are left to sort through is a silent danger: mold.

Last week at Northeast ENT, we diagnosed our second case of fungal sinusitis in someone who suffered significant water damage from the flood.

And now that the water has mercifully retreated, the moisture still continues. Days and days of cloudy weather and rain have left this area with exceedingly high mold counts.

Exposure to mold and mold spores in a contained area puts you at risk for an allergic reaction, asthma, or sinus, lung, ear and skin infections. Certain types of molds may even cause death in those with a weakened immune system.

Remember that we are at the tail-end of ragweed season and for those with seasonal allergic rhinitis, exposure to mold could overwhelm an already fragile immune system, leading to exaggerated symptoms and complex infections.

So what can we do? Dry out! Affected areas must be cleared of water, de-humidified and thoroughly ventilated. Water-soaked furniture must be removed. If a musty odor is present, mold is probably to blame and further precautions must be taken to eliminate the mold.

When cleaning an affected area, remember to wear the proper mask and afterward, wash out your nose, just as you wash your hands. Saline nasal irrigation is very effective for reducing mold. Remember that the nose and nasal cavity are the gateways for the air that enters our lungs. Keep the “entrance” clean and you will dramatically reduce your odds of getting sick.

If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, fever, thick mucus, facial pain/pressure, or a new rash, a visit to the doctor is highly recommended. Severe allergic reactions may be avoided with specific allergy medications and the avoidance of certain triggers.

Northeast ENT wants to let you know that we are very aware of the dangers that mold can present and we have same-day appointments reserved for patients with urgent needs. We look forward to assisting you and your family in this trying time for our community.
